ABOUT THE RESEARCH

Conducted during the summer of 2020, our extensive research uncovered the urgent opportunity to address how we, especially Americans, work today – in general, now, and prior to COVID-19 – degrades our collective sense of belonging.

By contrast, a strong sense of belonging expands possibilities for humanity and business. Not only does fostering belonging at work address a fundamental human need, workplaces with inclusive cultures are six times more likely to innovate and weather market change. Plus, belonging is correlated with a bottom-line impact to the tune of $52M/year.

Our findings address the topics of remote work, systemic racism, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), loneliness and mental heath, job performance, retention, burnout, “professionalism”, behaviors of belonging, and more.

This research is for organizational leaders. Whether you are leading from the top as CEO or Executive Director, championing a people-first perspective as Chief Culture Officer, VP of Human Resources, Head of Learning & Development, or People Operations Manager, or leading an innovating team, this research is for you.

Community leaders will also benefit from understanding how uncertainty impacts belonging. While this research focused specifically on belonging at work, this work is for everyone who brings people together toward a cause or in service of an outcome.
